Vista also has this quirk? LMAO So much for the idea that MS supposedly
wrote Vista new from the ground up. Oh well, maybe that was just the
security parts of the OS.

Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Optical drives

Normally, (strong emphasis on that word) Windows will pop-up a dialog
askingwhat you want to do with a just inserted disc. This should (strong
emphasis on that word) happen with each disk whether it is brand new-never
used or has data of any sort on it unless you have disabled that capability
or previously set default actions for the type of data on the disc.
When you open Windows Explorer or Computer/My Computer with no DVD inserted,
your drive will be correctly identified as a CD or DVD drive as appropriate
(mine is identified as a DVD-RAM drive). Once you insert a disc it then IDs
it as a plain CD or CD-RW drive. That happens on Dell, Compaq and HP
computers and probably on all other brands as well. That is normal
behavior, even though we all know it is abnormal behavior. The
mis-identification is present in XP and Vista and will likely go un-fixed in
Windows 7. It is more important to make the OS look pretty than it is to
make it work right and work securely. M$ does this to confuse the typical
consumer so they will appreciate how *pretty* the OS.
