DDR memory is Double Data Rate memory, as opposed to SDR, which is
Single Data Rate. As the computer runs, the memory is written to or
read from in cycles (Hz and MHz are cycles; a cycle has front side and a
back side or an up-slope and a down-slope, as the voltage grows and then
diminishes in the circuit); how fast depends on the memory bus speed.
SDR RAM can only be written to on one side of the cycle and then has to
wait while the opposite side of the cycle finishes and can then write or
read again. DDR RAM makes it possible to write or read on BOTH sides of
the cycle, which essentially makes the read/write processes to the
memory go twice as fast.
