Thanks Don, for the clarification, I didn't realize they were separate entities. IE would not even launch, all I got was a totally blank page with nothing on it except a few icons at the top left, but nothing happened when I clicked on them. The solution turned out to be restoring the system to an earlier time. I'm sure my friends tried that, but I did it myself and I noticed you can choose other dates than what they show. I suppose they tried that too, but I don't think they turned off AVG, so all of the restore efforts were unsuccessful. When I tried to restore and it didn't work, the dialog box said to turn off the anti-virus, so I did and the restore was successful that time. I've waited a few days to be sure it's working ok and it is, for the most part, but I keep getting a dialog box that says "internet explorer is no longer working" and another one who says 'IE had to close and reopen this page' or something to that effect. This has been happening for several months now and I was thinking that could be what precipitated my whole problem to begin with. I have uninstalled IE and reinstalled it, but it still pops up. I'm thinking of using Chrome if it's not too weird. I wonder if I could keep IE while I learn Chrome? ~Glo -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Don Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2014 6:05 AM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: MS Word 2010 Sending and receiving email uses totally different software. So, Outlook can check your mail while Internet Explorer or other browser may not even exist on your computer. If IE launches OK but just does not display a page then launch it and use it's internet tools to clean up all your cookies and temporary internet files. Do you have firefox and/or chrome? Do they work OK? -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Glo Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2014 4:21 AM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: MS Word 2010 Ok, now I have a super big problem. Some friends have been here all afternoon/evening trying to fix it, but I'm afraid they might not be sure of what they're doing. Oh, the problem is I think my home page has been hijacked. I can't get online because IE is missing!! When I try to go anywhere, even Google, all I get is a blank page. Not even an error message, just a blank page. I think this happened to me around 8 or 10 years ago and someone on the list helped me to fix it. But the memory dims as we age and I have no clue how to fix this. Anybody know? We've tried the obvious things like system restore and scanning with every program that has a scanner, but no luck. Actually, I've been getting this dialog box, very frequently, that says "internet explorer is no longer working" and must shut down, so I guess it finally gave up and crapped out completely!!? I don't understand that I can get and send email, but can't get on the internet. Can anyone help with this one? ~Glo ------------------------------------------------------------ --- Please remember to trim your replies (including this sentence and everything below it) and adjust the subject line as necessary.
