I tried a version of Ubuntu Linux a while back. I could not find a driver for the Linksys network gear and did not want to bother with the rigamarole operation to hack one out. I may try it again, but if there is a problem with drivers, I'll pass. For that matter, there's no such thing as a program that doesn't have them, either. The difference here is that Linux & open source software are constantly being worked on by multiple developers all over the world, many of whom spend the majority of their time hunting for security issues so they can be fixed before the bad guys find them. Proprietary software, on the other hand, usually end up fixing their security issues only after the hole has been reported to them. In some cases, the bad guys find out about it at the same time. Another problem is that proprietary software makers have update 'schedules' where you have to wait until a specific date before they release their bug fixes. In most cases, that means waiting until they update to a new version or sub-version (with MS, it means waiting until Patch Tuesday, the 2nd Tues of each month), even if the breach was discovered the day after their last update/patch/etc.. With Linux, it's as soon as they have the issue fixed. Not to mention that 99.9% of the crackers out there intentionally target MS products because of their ubiquitousness. This disparity is likely to shift a little as Linux continues to gain in popularity, but it's going to be a LONG time before it ever reaches even. Even then, the open source architecture of the Linux community will still far outshine MS in response time. I know several folks who run certain Linux distros (Debian comes up most often) with absolutely no security apps installed. These are very technically inclined individuals who certainly understand the risks, but feel perfectly at ease when running linux. They would never consider running a MS or Apple OS that way, though.
