I really wasn't sure how to label this...it's really strange to me. This in
a Win98 machine. Has Norton's antivirus on it. I was called over as he
couldn't get his printer installed, which I had no problems with. But first
thing I noticed was in the Device manage he has ton's of Yellow
exclamations. Most are on duplicate things....like the Floppy....he has two
listed one with an exclamation point. Keyboard mouse...com ports and lots
in the system devices! I removed the floppy, keyboard and mouse and
restarted. On shut down and start up he gets a copy of what looks like his
desk top but with bigger icons in the task bar and four open windows tiled
on top of each other. The back one which you can only see the top bar says
3 1/2 Floppy (that's open but there nothing in the floppy). the next one out
says rpd32w and you can see auto in that window...then we have one that
says Norton's side effect repair tool and in the center of that one there is
another window that says "Removal status and an ok box. You can't click on
any of these. As I said they come up on both shut down and start up....but
it does shut down and start up. ON start when you get to the normal desktop
then tow more windows pop up that you can shut down. First is Internet
Explore and gives you the option to work off line or cancel. Then the other
says C:\Windows\Startup\KAK.hta........ah ha I said and first I went to
Norton's Quarantine and it had KAK in it...I removed it.Then I went and
removed it for the startup menu in Windows, also went to MSCONFIG and found
it in there as two files and unchecked them. I was also listed in the
AutoExec. We ran Norton's ....no Virus showing. restarted and same things
(all of them were back). I came home and got my KAK remover disk...ran both
a and b....still no change. When it comes back up everything I unchecked or
removed is back! I started questioning him about if he ever had a
virus....he did have the kak some time ago and took it down to our server
provider and had him remove it....and it was running fine. He doesn't know
when this started. Then I also found out that he had originally had Win2K
and a friend upgraded his machine for him and there was a problem getting it
to work so he put Win98 on it instead! I have already advised him that it
looks like he needs to be reformatted and started all over. But I wanted
find out if any of you might have any idea what's going on and any other way
to fix it.
