The word "loopback" was the word that I couldn't remember.  I could, however,
remember "dongle."  Reminds me of that old song from the '70s:  "I'll give you
a dongle a day, dear."  ;-)

From doing a google search it looks like USB testing software requires a USB
Loopback Plug.  I doubt such a thing could detect a USB port acting a little
"hinky" and that you would probably need an expensive USB port analyzer for
that.

is there a device (e.g., USB "dongle") and/or program that one can use to
tell if (in this case) the USB ports on one's notebook computer are working
completely correctly?  I know that there used to be such a set up for
parallel ports and serial ports "back in the day," but my "best" notebook's
acting a little "hinky" when I connect USB drives to the USB ports on that
computer. The prospect of replacing the motherboard or the computer is not
something that I would relish, so getting a "clean bill of health" would be
a very pleasant surprise.  It is probably fine, but these days I'd like all
the "clean bills of health" that I could possibly have.  (I say, inside
joke, there, sons.) Any suggestions?

Larry
