I was doing some reading in Hibernation help files the other day.  Once a 
computer is placed into Hibernation any attached USB devices, such as thumb 
drives and hard drives should be left attached until the system is awakened 
and "Safely Remove Hardware" has been accomplished.  I ass u me the same 
applies for Sleep (and maybe standby) and in Vista Hybrid Hibernation.
It did not explain why, but as I was just re-reading a post by Gman about
