I opened sysinternals' Process Explorer. Stopped everything that I thought
might be the problem, including Win Patrol, a Toshiba utility that monitors
hard drives and everything portable that I carry on it. I might have to get
Hijack This and see what it says.

Bingo! Maybe. I just went to my systray see if the portable HiJack was in
any of my portable folders and I noticed that AVG has a second icon that
shows and it indicates that AVG is scanning my portable devices. I will
have to watch and see if this is happening every time I have the problem.

You've bsically answered this one yourself. Something that's loading on
startup is referencing something on the USB drive. As an example, if you
store your email data files on the USB drive and open up your email client,
that would be enough to cause this issue. If you have installed anything
directly to the external, that could also be the cause.

Review what's stored on the external and think in terms of what might be
required by 'anything' during bootup. Properly relocate any items you feel
might be the cause and try again until you get it back to the functionality
you want.

Peace,
Gman
