Try this defrag program. I know it reboots before running - but I'm not savvy enough to know if it runs with minimal drivers. I do know that it completes the process every time. http://www.powerdefrag.com/ Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: Cajun To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2002 2:06 AM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Can't dial-up; PLUS Defrag problem My brother is having a dial-up problem with his HP Pavilion computer (633MHz Celeron) running Windows ME. He has a Lucent Win Modem. One day he was surfing the Internet, the next day the modem wouldn't dial up - no sounds, nothing. Modem properties shows the modem on Com 2 (Interrupt Request 09), and the Diagnostics tab reveals a string of commands and responses from the modem. Device Manger is showing Com 1 (Interrupt Request 04), Com 5 (Interrupt Request 03), and LPT Port 1. I'm running Windows 98 1st Edition and my computer only shows Com 1 and LPT1 in Device Manager, and my modem is on COM2. When he tries to dial up, he gets a message that he has no dial tone. He has checked the line connections and plugged a phone directly into the modem and got a dial tone. He also called his ISP and went over all his settings and they said it was not on their end or his settings. What could be the problem? Also, he can't get past 3% on a defrag, even though he has no screen saver selected, shuts down his anti-virus program, and has only a volume control icon in the tray. When defrag gets to 3%, it starts over. He's not very computer literate and HP hides all the boot selections behind a splash screen, so he doesn't know how to start the computer in Safe Mode. What is the name of the defrag program that automatically reboots the computer with a minimum of drivers before defragging? I'm running Windows ME defrag program on my Windows 98 machine with no problems. Thanks!
