I am a little unsettled with the idea of you using my prose to help tuck you in for the night, but I'll more than likely get over the initial shock. Kudos to you for devising a self-awakening strategy. > There is one mystery which remains in my mind, due no doubt to the > paucity of my English in trying to explain myself clearly:- It has been stated with authority (the results of some apparently scientific poll) that at least 40% of the full meaning of what we say in a text-only format is lost on the reader due to the loss of meaning conveyed with 'body language'. I am therefore surprised that you only have this one mystery to solve. It has also been stated with at least some authority that 97% of all polls are meaningless. We must each draw our own conclusions. > I have nonchalantly referred to "ringfencing my OS in the C drive" by > which of course I meant "partition" and you have replied with helpful > suggestions (as is your wont) .......BUT what does the OS comprise?? Oh boy! You may want to order some more vellum. In fact, I wish to order a separate post from me to convey this info as I feel it constitutes something that others may wish to save for future reference. > If (and my fingers, toes and eyes are all crossed) I DO succeed in > upgrading my HD, I shall immediately use Disk Director to partition > BEFORE attaching peripherals, (see! your logical and legendary mind > already set me on that commomnsense path) That's the best approach, but you need only keep the external disconnected during the install. The Recovery disk set will expect everything else to already be attached and will be ready to install drivers for those items without interfering with your drive letter assignments. Only the external will cause the problem if it is connected during the restoration. > Then having reinstalled antivirus, firewalls and other essentials, and > checked in with the List (so you don't worry that I have fallen into a > Black Hole) I appreciate that more than you can possibly know. > I shall perhaps create an Acronis Secure Zone in C partition to hold > the "OS". Since I have never used this feature, I have no comment on it other than to say that it sounds great on paper (or vellum). > So please, while the OS is mainly in "Windows" are there also other bits > in Docs and Settings, and even perhaps, Program Files?? ..... and what > about Cab. and sr and Temp?? All excellent questions that do very little to hide your intelligent approach to learning. All of which, hopefully, will be revealed (or at least somewhat demystified) in my next post. > Roger W. --------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember to trim your replies (including this sentence and everything below it) and adjust the subject line as necessary.
