My preference now is Microsoft Essentials, it is free and works so well. 
Have it on all the family computers. It updates itself with MS updates.
I used AVG and Avast but this is better.
I also use MalwareBytes and Super Antispyware free editions if I suspect 
I have clicked something bad.  Never have but they clean out some adware 
so cannot hurt.
