Hello,

Could someone tell me if you think my computer could handle an 8 or 10 GB hard
drive and say just 128 MB RAM? If the answer is yes, do you know where I can
get my hands on a small hard drive, preferably Western Digital, without paying
an arm and a leg? Details below?

I have a Gateway G6-233, Pentium II 233 mHz processor, 32 MB SDRAM, 200 Watt
power supply and "had" a 4 GB hard drive (ran into a problem and don?t know if
it is still good). The computer will be 5 years old in January. I want to
upgrade the hard drive and the memory at least a little bit. It was running
Windows 95 but I have since obtained Windows 98SE. Gateway tech support tells
me that I can upgrade to a 136 GB hard drive and 256 MB RAM as long as I
upgrade to at least Windows 98 and I don?t have to upgrade any other hardware.
I thought it was odd that I could go as high as 136 GB for a hard drive without
needing to upgrade the mobo, processor, power supply or fan. I went to a local
computer parts dealer and tried to buy a Western Digital 40 GB hard drive and
256 SDRAM and the service clerk told me that these components would not work in
my computer, that it was too old, I should just buy a new one and not waste any
money on the old computer. A new computer is not in the budget at the moment.
Also, when I am ready to buy a new computer, I plan on keeping the old one as
an offline machine to run financial software on. I do absolutely no gaming but
do spend a lot of time on the internet and do quite a bit of word processing. I
don?t "need" to go as high as a 40 GB hard drive, it was just on sale at a very
reasonable price and lower size hard drives are not easy to find. 8 or 10 GB
would be enough. Prior to the problems with the current 4 GB drive, the files
and software that were loaded on it took up more than half the disk space. That
is why I want to get a bigger drive. Things got somewhat bogged down when I
had several programs open at the same time which is why I want more RAM.
Internet connection is cable.

Thank you in advance for your time and your help,

Wendy
