[pcho] Re: Potting "soil" - what to do with it?

I typically save the potting soil in the pots in my garage over the winter.
For pots that need to be recycled, I reuse the potting soil in my veggie and
herb gardens. The peatmoss and perlite help to loosen our heavy clay soil,
which can help with water infiltration and retaining moisture. It seems
counter-intuitive to put that in the trash.  I do agree with Sandi that they do
not belong in prairies, esp. not in our common areas.

I only ask that you not throw it in the Prairie. Soils that don't belong there
contain microbes that are injurious to native plants. It invites invasives and
in general is damaging to the ecosystem. Thanks for asking about this. Many
people would have just thrown it wherever it was convenient  - often the
prairie.

It's not actually soil; it's peat moss and horticultural perlite.

Is it compost? Is it something to take to the farm? Is it something
for the trash?
