Aha! So does this happen when quickly restarting TB immediately
after shutting it down?

I would recommend not killing the process (using Windows Task
Manager) and instead waiting longer. Otherwise, you might prevent
Firefox and Thunderbird from shutting down correctly. In the case
of FF, you might only lose cache or history contents, but in the
case of TB, it could produce profile corruption. You probably
wouldn't lose mail, but it could be causing the problems with
corrupted index files and compacting problems we've been seeing.

So the easy solution might be to run WTM and watch how long it
takes for FF and TB to shut down on your computer. Then you know
how long to wait until you can restart. I've never had this
problem though, although i often restart TB or FF quickly. Maybe
i just put a check mark in "don't ask at startup" and you didn't?

Do you see a second profile when the profile manager starts? If
you're really, really sure which one is the correct one, you
could delete the other one. (First make a backup to beat Murphy)

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
