You won't be able to use the NETBEUI protocol for file sharing because it has been dropped from windows and it probably isn't available in Ubuntu. That leaves TCP/IP, which both systems should have. However they are set up on the different systems, you will need to use very similar IP numbers on each system to bring them within range of each other.
