"The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), expected to begin operation in
Chili in 2022, will generate a 150 Petabyte image dataset of the southern
hemisphere. It will stream data at rates of 2 Terabytes per hour, capturing an
unprecedented movie of the sky." [IEEE Computational Intelligence, August 2014,
page 27.]

Time Domain Astronomy (TDA) is experiencing a paradigm shift toward data-driven
astronomy. Two new fields, astroinformatics and astrostatistics "...combine
statistics, data mining, knowledge discovery, machine learning and
computational Intelligence, in order to provide the automated and robust
methods needed for the rapid detection and classification of known
astrophysical objects as well as the unsupervised characterization of novel
phenomena."
