California is a great example of why referenda may no longer work in a place
controlled by zealots and unions. The way propositions get drafted in
California, with maximum chance of being sold in exactly the opposite way the
language actually reads, is one example. Another is the massive amount of money
public employee unions are prepared to spend to demagogue the electorate into
voting against their actual interests. It is a huge, high-stakes game these
days. Polls are usually useless as well, given the clever way the questions are
written to elicit the desired answer rather than true feelings about an issue.
For example, to take Lia Thomas using male muscles on the women's swim team at
Penn, the Lefties would ask whether you believe transsexuals should be
discriminated against, to which almost everyone would say no. The proper
question, to which well over 70% of the populace, probably closer to 95% if
those polled were being honest, would answer "no" would be "should biological
males who self-identify as female be allowed to compete in women's sports
activities where muscle strength is a vital aspect of the sport".

It would be interesting to see genuine, unbiased referendums on many of these
things. Is this really what a majority wants, or is this all getting jammed
down our throats by a vocal minority...

I never used to believe it when Doug was saying, as he had for twenty years,
that things were worse than I thought. He was right, although it's possible
that things are even worse than he thought. I only was able to get a JV letter
in college, and I'm thinking of going back as a girl to get the big one.

What an absurd joke all of this is.

If you ever have the dubious honor of being asked to lecture about Vietnam at
UC Irvine, make sure you do not use the term "DMZ", which is verboten, replaced
by "perimeter network". And for God's sake, do not say we should have "nuked"
the bastards, rather we should have "deleted" them. Unfortunately, the speech
code doesn't tell us what new word we should use for nuking a frozen dinner in
the microwave.
