Biden is not wasting any time: gun reforms linked to safe schools. Now
teacher's unions can demand "comprehensive" gun control legislation be enacted
before it will be "safe" to return to the classroom.
"This Administration will not wait for the next mass shooting to heed that
call. We will take action to end our epidemic of gun violence and make our
schools and communities safer," the president said in a statement. "Today, I am
calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring
background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity
magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put
weapons of war on our streets. We owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all
those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now."

Subject: [pa64] Dueling banjos
I refer to the tension between state and federal authority, this time on guns.
The Utah legislation described in the linked article is an example of how the
Constitution is supposed to work. On the other hand, Biden has been clear that
gun control is high on his agenda, and is likely to happen quickly now that the
Democrats in Congress are apparently moving on from Trump now that the fever
has broken. A reinstatement of the assault weapons ban, magazine limits,
federal gun registration, federal red flag law, etc. appear to be in the
offing. This may well be the issue that will provide the impetus for court
packing, at both the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court levels. There is no
prospect that Roe v. Wade would ever be overturned. As to the Court's make-up,
reading the tea leaves, I won't be surprised to see Alito decide it's not worth
the demonization anymore and given Biden or Harris an unexpected seat to fill.
A legitimate question to ask is why is it that only Republican appointees
disappoint their appointers? Democrat appointees are uniformly radical
throughout their tenure. Inquiring psychiatrists want to know.
