I’m in a Life Plan Community called Jefferson’s Ferry. I have a 2 bedroom apt
and use one for my office. The living room has a fireplace and wall-to-wall
windows and a balcony overlooking a pond. The food is very good and believe it
or not a person could have filet mignon every day if one wanted. The menus
read like a restaurant menu with lots of choices, with some changes daily.
There are 3 places to eat, a cafe for informal cafeteria style (was buffet
before Covid), a formal dining room with wait service, and a pub, also
informal. Every Friday in the pub they serve Hors d’oeuvres and a free
alcoholic drink for Happy Hour. Soon there will be a new venue called
DestiNations with rotating international cuisine. It hasn’t opened yet because
the chairs ordered are in one of those ships backed up in some harbor
somewhere. Many of the residents take some of the evening meal home (They serve
a lot!) and have it for lunch. Me. too! So all I’ve cooked so far in 8 months
is eggs for breakfast twice, bacon once for a BLT, some rhubarb -raspberry jam
from stuff I brought from the freezer I had in Oneonta, a cake to take when I
went to my niece’s, and pecan pie bars to take to Thanksgiving dinner at my
niece’s. I also made the 24- hour pickles that Terry Matte likes to make. I get
my own breakfast which is usually a quickie.
Had a problem with the pickles. I saw the Kirby pickles and dill fronds in the
same store and HAD to make them. I forgot that it is the dill *head* that is
supposed to be used. None of that to found here, so googled and substituted
dill seeds along with the dill fronds/leaves?? Weren’t bad , but not just as
good! I will only make them next year if I’m able to get the dill heads.
Lots of stuff to do here, fitness classes, swim aerobics, art class, special
programs, lectures, trips to museums and musical programs—plays when they open
up here. The 8 buildings are joined at a bend which they call a knuckle. In
each knuckle are activites like bridge, poker, scrabble, a puzzle, shuffle
board, and some I may not have discovered yet.
As Bette Davis once said on TV, “Old age ain’t for sissies!” I have some
health issues—have to have a hip replacement. BUT—they discovered a node on my
thyroid that has caused my trachea to bend—called it deviated. They have to fix
that before the hip can be done because they said I couldn’t have anesthesia
with the way way it is now.
One thing for sure that is a problem here on Long Island—it takes many months
before you can see a doctor, like anywhere from 3 to 8 months for an initial
visit. So I do worry about the thyroid issue as the appointment to see the
doctor who decides what to do for my thyroid issue isn’t until Dec 21st. Then
it may be months for it to be done—and months more for the hip.
Sorry for the long update, but I really do like this place and glad I made this
choice.
