You did exactly the right thing pulling the box forward.
The traffic jam may simply have instinctively clustered because it was
chilly, and most likely will move into the hive in the next 1-2 hours. If
not, suit up and scoop them into e.g. a margarine tub with a feather, and
dump them in the top of the hive!
But get back to us if there is an unexpected development like, they keep
teturning to the entrance.
Also check under the hive (I'm assuming it'd a Warre on legs), sometimes
bees end up in s cluster there
