That (venting via gas "in") is what I've been doing, too. I wondered if I
was overlooking something.
It looks like this valve is one way to upgrade those old lids:

These kegs don't have a poppet. They have this plastic plug that seems to
be fixed and not a way to vent it. Based on that square hole on the inside,
I think I could use a driver and back it out? Is there a way to install a
poppet on these types of lids? (3 images hopefully attached)
