Down Home has been fighting a long time for Medicaid Expansion in North
Carolina. The hard work of our folks is paying off. Let's get it across the
finish line for them and for all of us.
Last week, North Carolina’s Senate said “Yes!” to Medicaid Expansion, and
loudly declared that it was now up to the House to bring Bill 149 to the
floor for a vote.
*The question is, will the House leadership bring Medicaid Expansion to the
floor for a vote? Not without us.*
While we applaud this moment, we know that politics are in play. *We
urgently need Down Home folks to communicate to your legislator that
600,000 people need healthcare now. *To pass Medicaid Expansion, we must
share why we care.
I care about my friend Betsy, a farmer and a former Certified Nurse
Assistant (CNA) who was injured on the job and can no longer work. After
she was let go from her CNA work, Betsy’s health insurance was terminated.
Her back still hurts and she is still paying off a hospital bill. There is
no more money for ongoing care and this month, she struggled to pay her
utilities and car insurance. Betsy has worked hard all of her life, often
working two or more jobs to pay the bills and keep her family farm going,
but now she cannot work due to her injuries.
Betsy is just one of the 600,000 people in the healthcare gap, earning too
much for Medicaid and not enough to enroll in affordable care. Our stories
are powerful and now that I shared my care for Ann I bet you care, too.
Let’s take these stories and bring them to our legislators. We can help
them do the right thing,

Right now, we have an opportunity to offer hundreds of thousands of working
families health coverage, and pull in $2 billion dollars in federal funding
for our state -- *if we expand Medicaid during this legislative session*.
With so much at stake and so much to gain from closing our state’s coverage
gap, we need to act, purposefully and passionately. We need to close North
Carolina’s healthcare coverage gap once and for all.

meeting with their representatives in Raleigh, telling them our stories,
and to ask them to pass Medicaid Expansion! Want to get involved? We will
help set up the appointment and give you everything you need to make your
time with your representative successful and impactful.

You can help get Medicaid Expansion to pass the NC House by contacting
rural North Carolinians and talking to them about what's at stake and what
we could have! This volunteer is opportunity is every Wednesday night and
you can do it from home-- all you need is a computer and a phone! We will
provide all the training and help you get on your way.
