-- Anthony Burgess, Napoleon Symphony, 1974 ORIGINNescience comes from
Late Latin nescientia âignorance, unawareness,â which is probably a
neologism coined by the Christian monk, philosopher, and theologian
Claudianus Mamertus, who died about 432. Nescientia derives from
nescient-, the stem of nesciÄns, present participle of nescÄ«re âto
be ignorant, not to know.â The âpositiveâ verb scÄ«re âto
knowâ is the source of English âscience.â Nescience entered
English in the 17th century.
