Hey Rosie, sometimes my mom would take me home from nursery school on the bus.
I guess someone else would pick us up and take us to the school in the morning.
If memory serves, school in my case was from 9:00 to noon. I went there when I
was three and four.
We lived in a city in the East Bay called San Leandro, and the section we were
in was called Washington Manor. My mom still lives in the house where I grew
up. Even as a kid, we felt safe enough particularly on summer nights to be out
late at night especially when my mom was with us. Sometimes we'd go to a nearby
park. Sometimes my mom would let us stay outtill 10 or 11 when we'd play with
toys we had, particularly celebrating the last day of school or some other
holiday like that. I do remember having small grocery stores at corners that we
could walk to. Don't know how they all competed and stayed in business as long
as they did. My dad was in the grocery business, beginning as a warehouseman in
the produce section of Lucky Stores. Of course, Lucky's was a national chain,
particularly popular on the West Coast but had stores by other names like Pigley
Wigley particularly in Southern states. Sometimes my mom would take us to his
warehouse if she needed the car to go somewhere and he would need a ride back
home. He'd take us around on a forklift, or maybe he'd show us how the bananas
or some other fruit were stored. We got unofficial tours of the warehouse, and
I could see the pallets that boxes of produce would be stacked on. My aunt was
my first mobility instructor in that she didn't drive, so when I traveled with
her, even when very little, three or four, we took the busses. That was
adventurous as far as I was concerned! We'd go into downtown Oakland, which was
a wonderful place to go in those days, and we'd shop at stores like Capwell's,
maybe Hale's or Khan's. And then there was Edie's Restaurant which had homemade
ice cream and wonderful food! Aaahhh, those were the days indeed, and wonderful
family memories that I'll always cherish.
