Hello Ronnie:
I have known about archive.org for a long time, has anything about the site
changed? About three years ago when I was there the search engine was
complicated and hard for me to use and some of their stuff had someone who
didn’t know what they were doing and ran a cleaner over it to lower the noise
level and messed up the file. To me the noise doesn’t sound as bad as a file
that has been messed up by a cleaner used badly.
I’ve had other people find stuff on that site that I could not find. From what
I did find I thought it was too much work for what I got.
I grew up with the wind up players and learned to have a noise filter between
my ears and my brain so the noise doesn’t bother me as much as it does other
folks, that’s why I don’t clean my files. I can show you some files that are
perfect without a trace of noise but they have been cleaned to death and are as
flat as yesterday’s pancake. Think of it this way; if someone gave me a
home-brewed beer and it didn’t have any yeast in the bottom of the bottle I
would have to wonder what was going on, likewise a trace of the background
noise tells me that it is a real 78 and has not been tampered with.
