Well I'm not really sure what's going to happen yet. I mean Palow didn't say
anything that she wouldn't get me but the thing I'm concerned about is it is if
I go all the way to New Jersey and she doesn't show up. Then I have to turn
around and go back home. So I don't know what's going to happen. I still could
take the bus but still somebody would have to meet me at the other end so I'm
not really sure what to do here either. Why everything is all paid for and I
don't have to pay the extra $60 I got an email about that too.

This retreat is being set up by the Unitarian churches a bunch of them. But I
think I'm the only one from my church that's going. But we kind of hit a
snag. And I'm not really sure how to deal with this. This lady said she take
me up if I took the train to New Jersey. The thing is I don't know her and
we've never met. The thing is is the 10 station is all messed up because
you're doing trackwork because of some derailments. I just read a letter
about it on the Internet in my email and attach in the station is all messed
up schedules trains are all messed up and everything and they're going to be
doing repairs over the summer. Anyway the one guy wanted me to take the bus
to Allentown but the thing is nobody's making any kind of arrangements for me
to get net serious so I really don't know how to handle this and I don't know
this lady named Paula and the thing is if I take the train to New Jersey I'm
not even sure she's going to show up. So I really don't know what to do here.
This is the thing this is some woman I don't know never met her and I feel
kind of uncomfortable because of somebody else I said I don't know. And I
really don't know how reliable she is an one so I told her I was blind and I
need would need help and 10 station to get the train to get to her now she's
changing her mind once you found that out. So I really don't know what to
think. But anyway at this retreat they're going to have workshops like yoga
and African drumming and stuff like that in a tour to a beer brewery and some
other stuff so I'm really not sure how to handle the situation with this lady.

Well Rosie I don't know how to shop online either but I'd like to learn at
some point. Right at this point all the grocery stores in New York City
deliver so that's kind of a non-issue. If I need stuff online somebody can
help me with that movie. Especially when it came to the retreat the person
who help me with that did it over the phone he just read me the questions and
I answered them. And that's basically how I handled it. I just told him I
couldn't do it with the iPhone and I didn't know how when he did it. Nothing
was said. Now I'm just trying to figure out transportation because there's
nobody going from New York City. The closest place would be Woodstock and I
can't get there. So that's basically how that goes. This lady one online and
she looked up the train schedule so we just have to figure this out. The only
thing that needs to be figured out is well I go from Penn station or will I
take a bus. The thing about Penn station is there repairing all the tracks
and it's a disaster in there and I don't know if they'll finish it by July
when we go. But we'll just have to see and this lady I'm supposed to meet I
don't know her. I'm supposed to meet her at one of the train stations and
will go by car. But how we're going to find each other is a mystery I think.
Because I don't know what she looks like so basically that's how it goes. And
I'm going to definitely have to take myself phone with me in case this falls
through. So I'm not really sure it's going to be a definite deal. Plus I need
to have somebody help me go online again so I can pay the $60 that I still
need to pay. Most of it is paid for except for that amount and I can call the
guy on Monday and maybe he can help me pay it. Because the registrar sent me
a confirmation saying I got the scholarship but I didn't see a phone number
where to call him to pay it. So we'll just have to see. So I have a feeling
that I'll have to call the gentleman that I help me before and ask him to
help me again. It's some point yes I will learn how to go online. But as I
said before right now it's a non-issue. I mean if I want stuff from Amazon
I'll just try to get another way. But we'll just have to see how that goes.

Kenneth, try real hard to answer this one question: If the rest of us can
shop online, whether independently or with help, why can’t you? If you lack
the computer skills, learn them. There are plenty of willing helpers in the
blind community. As for me, I usually get help to shop online, but I have
done it sometimes. How come you’re the only one with these weighty problems?

Heres what happened to me I have lived alone since the year 2000 when I
first got my Gateway with windows 98 and jaws 3.50. Every site I went to
required a membership to use the site. When filling out the form at the
bottom there was a picture with crap one is supposed to type in the boxes
below. There would be no phone number on the site to call for help and a lot
of sites had their e-mail rigged the same way. When I could get the e-mail to
work some of them wouldnt answer or their answers wasnt helpful.
Wal mart has the add to shopping cart button out of reach of the keyboard.
Amazon has their site so convoluted that I cant follow the trail without
help. Im a human not a rat, I dont run mazes About four years ago I got
someone from Amazon on the phone and tried to buy and download an mp3 file.
After buying the file no way of starting the downloading could be found. I
have gone back and tried to buy something from Amazon with both of my
computers, the Xp. And the windows 7 with no results. (Im running jaws 17
demo on the 7 computer)
When I moved to my new house I had an electric cook stove and needed a heat
spreader pad to go under my glass coffee pot. Not being able to find one in
the local stores I called Amazon and was told that they had one but they
couldnt sell it over the phone. Well that screwed that, I had to get me a
different coffee pot. The electric company sends me my bill buy e-mail which
is nice of them because their site is so confusing I cant handle it. Its
like digging for ones mail in the dumpster.
About 8 years ago AT and T wanted me to start paying my phone bill on line so
I went to their site and tried to set up my account. I couldnt get it done
so I called At and T and asked for a lineman who was already paying his bill
on line to stop in and help me when he was in my area I was Told by AT and T
that they couldnt do that and why didnt I get a friend to help me I told
them that my friend wasnt the one who wanted the money, they were. The next
time I paid my bill with my Visa card over the phone AT and T had put a $5
extra charge on paying over the phone with plastic! That little act earned
them a call from the Public Utilities Commission.
Visa did everything possible to force me to get help from a sighted person to
set up the Internet account thus compromising my Security. Visa couldnt
leave their site alone and kept on changing things until I was finely forced
off of the site. I have a Discover card now.
Theres a lot more but why belabor the point, I think you get the idea. I
tried one last time to get the open drive software to work just before I
downloaded my e-mail. It was the same old story you need a user name, OK
button and no edit field to put anything in. I have been to the open drive
site with both computers logged in with ourplace@xxxxxxxxxxxxx password
audioldies and tried to use copy and paste nothing selected or when I press
the right mouse button to start a download the site offers to let me download
an html file. Like everything else Im locked out.
The only site where I can download anything is the bard talking book site,
everything else is shut out. Thats why I dont believe it.
I have witnesss who can testify to my fruitless struggles with an Internet
system that doesnt work.
This is the reason that I wrote that Article and why I send it to as many
people as possible to let them be aware of the problem that they are going to
face when they get old and their eyesight starts to get dim.
Government Regulation of the Internet is coming, Lets all pull together and
get something useful done before these sighted people do something stupid
that shuts all of us out.
(I talked to three different Wal Mart centers in three different states with
no results, from a company that is pulling in about 240 billion dollars that
is expected as they dont care about us).
