Hey Gary, Hope you've gotten your computer woes solved. I know you were having
a really rough time and didn't know of anyone who could help you to repair your
computer.
Walked on my foot for the first time extensively Friday and some Saturday.
Actually, Saturday was more standing, and I'm learning my limits. Don't think
I'll be able to walk long distances although I certainly can walk. Not sure
I'll ever be able to take busses again. Oh well.
Have just been accepted for Alameda County's In-Home Support Services, and I've
just hired a lady who can provide me with the help I need. She only lives three
blocks from me, but she may have to move in the not toodistant future so I'll
enjoy her while I have her. Thanks so much for your good thoughts!!

Hi! Wanted to share my good news. I'm no longer required to wear the bulky
and
heavy boot on my left leg to immobilize my left foot. I gather that the
goal
was to keep the bones and ligaments from slipping out of place as there are
bunches of things that can happen at the top of the foot with so many little
bones that can get broken. All of these bones are connected to ligaments.
I
was told at the orthopedic appointment that I could start using a regular
shoe
at any time. I also got an injection put into my right shoulder at the
front
side of it. That had never been tried before, and apparently I've got a lot
of
what they termed bone growth (probably some kind of calcium or something
similar) at the front of the right shoulder. The injection has made a
difference, and I'm being able to do things but not having to take pills
every
six hours on the dot for pain. I can if need be go a couple of extra hours
between dosages. As of Thursday, the day of my orthopedic appointment, I
went
out once I got off of the paratransit van to go to a favorite Mexican
restaurant
in Alameda with my friend Ann. I was able to put my shoe on with no
problem,
and I was able to go down and upstairs with no problem and could walk to and
from the parking lotand in and out of the restaurant. I can't tell you what
a
relief it is to finally be able to use my regular white cane again as
opposed to
the support cane that would help me get up and down the stairs and that
would
help me walk around. When I went to the bank's ATM today, it was kind of
rough
standing for the amount of time I needed to stand in order to go through the
audible directions I needed to utilize today, but that was the last stop,
and
once I got upstairs and into my house, I was able to sit down and rest.
One of the pieces of mail today was an approval letter related to my
applicationfor in-home support services. I've been approved for 8 hours of
help
per week, including help doing laundry and possibly cooking dinner meals
since I
am not strong enough with my shoulder and arm problems (with the arthritis
being
so bad) to stir a lot of things in a pan or to lift a pan off of a stove and
get
things out of it. I'm pretty sure the provider will be able to put some
food in
tupperware containers for me so I can store them in the frij and then I
should
be able to wash even the heavier pans out once I get through the dinner
meal.
Reheating things shouldn't be a problem. I'm also going to get a crockpot
but
not sure which size. I have to find the cassette tapes which have the Rival
Crockpot cookbook on them to determine what size of crockpot my first
husband
and I had. He read me the entire book onto cassettes when we were married
for
the year we were married. Anyway, I'm so delighted about the approval of
the
in-home support services. I need the help as much as ever even though I'm
free
from the boot. For instance, I can wash sheets and change a bed, but it's
really taxing on me. I'll just have to do it once more, and then I'll be
able
to make it through February as I'll see my housekeeper on February 15th.
