Attention Runners/Walkers:
Creature caution: Coyotes roam the ORR
Staff members or guests who are at ORNL facilities after hours should be aware
that coyotes are abundant on the Oak Ridge Reservation. A Lab Protection hall
coordinator watched a pack of as many as 10 coyotes cross Spallation Drive
recently while making a midnight facility check.
As he continued up the hill he passed a jogger heading toward the ORNL Guest
House, which is near the Spallation Neutron Source and Center for Nanophase
Materials Sciences.
"This means that approximately five minutes before the coyotes crossed
Spallation Drive the jogger was passing that area at midnight," says Laboratory
Shift Superintendent Danny Rosenbalm.
Wildlife management coordinator Kelly Roy says coyotes, once absent in the
South east of the Mississippi River, were first sighted on the ORR in 1978. In
1984 a pair of coyotes was observed raising a litter of pups on the east end of
the reservation, and a road kill was reported that same year. By 1990 an
estimated 12-16 coyotes existed on the ORR. Though no recent coyote studies
have been conducted, the ORR undoubtedly supports hundreds of coyotes today.
Coyotes are extremely adaptable and live quite comfortably in suburban and
urban settings,<https://www.tn.gov/twra/article/urban-coyotes> including on the
ORNL campus. If you encounter them, give coyotes a wide berth and never
approach or attempt to feed them or any wild animal. Although attacks on people
are extremely rare, be particularly vigilant when walking to your vehicle after
dark, restrict walking and jogging activities to daylight hours, and partner
outdoor activities with a fellow employee whenever possible.
If you observe a coyote that appears sick, is acting odd or seems aggressive;
contact on-site Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency managers, Aubrey Deck
(755-4930) or Shannon Young (755-4845). You may also contact the LSS (574-6606;
576-4LSS) or the wildlife management coordinator, Kelly Roy (574-7422).
Thanks,
Joan
