Hey Alex,
Not sure about eBird links. But I know sometimes in the app, if you delete
a bird by deleting the "1" (or another #) next to it, then it'll reappear
in your list when you save it. You have to click and hold on the bird name
and then choose "clear data". Maybe this bug was fixed though, but if you
saw a surge of 0s then maybe it was related to a bug.
Some people do intentionally put 0 if they want to put comments that a
given bird was conspicuously absent, for example.
My recollection is that eBird generally dislikes 0s except for a handful of
specific situations, but at the end of the day there are usually enough
bigger data quality issues that I end up not worrying about it.
