I tried out my new sun visor this morning.  Although it was overcast, there was enough sun shining through that I could tell it's going to be really useful in the future.  It consists of a photographer's light stand with a car sun visor attached to the top.  I epoxied a nut to a piece of scrap plywood to mate the two together.  The stand telescopes to 7 ft tall, so it can put the visor right between me and the sun.  The beauty of this compared to an opaque sun blocker is you can still see the airplane, so no losing orientation as it flies near the sun.

I'll bring the stand to tomorrow's meeting if you want to check it out.

I present the following for discussion at the meeting:

Whereas the flightline of /Dale Olson Memorial Field/ faces East, and
Whereas the best time to fly at /Dale Olson Memorial Field/ is in the morning before the wind comes up, and
Whereas it is easy, and hazardous to lose sight of one's plane while facing the sun, and
Whereas no more than four pilots can fly at a given time, and
Whereas it would be wasteful for each pilot to provide their own sun blocker, and
Whereas a sun blocker can be constructed for less than $40,

I hereby propose  ORCA purchase four photography stands (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085RRCNBF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for $17.50 each,
and four car sun visors (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XNG9LS7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for $18.00 each,
to equip each flying station at /Dale Olson Memorial Field/ with a sun visor.  These can be stored in the container when not in use.

The stand comes with an umbrella that isn't used for the sun visor application.  That leads to the question, "What to do with the surplus umbrellas?"  I think that for the ultimate in environmental protection, they could be mounted on pith helmets.

Cheers,

Tom
