I think the fundamental issue is the use of the word "target". This means something "selected as an object of attention" which makes sense when performing a backup, but when performing a duplicate I would argue doesn't make sense. I'd rather rman had the different syntax connect source <connection string> connect destination <connection string> for intra database activity. too late to change that I imagine.
