Dont make any manual change in inventory file... you can use the above
command suggested and that should work .

See if oraInst.loc is still around with find. In there is the inventory
location and it will have oraInventory/ContentsXML and a file named
inventory.xml.
It's ok to hack that xml file to remove the pointer to what you removed.
Make copy before you hack it.
