To add a little here. Yes 11.2.0.4 is it's own install just like Chris
pointed out just make sure you delete the Oracle_Home environment variable
before you start the software install, you can put it back after the
software is installed. Regarding PSU's, they have been converted into
Bundle Patches (BP) for Windows, I believe you don't have a choice. This
includes security patches and but fixes. I would make sure you get the
latest one as there was some issues last year with memory leaks and
breaking database links in a few of them. If you db links to other 11g
databases make sure they are upgraded too or you might have issues. Do your
own tests.
As for the actual upgrade, just run Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA) and
it will walk you through the upgrade. Warning though for me I had numerous
errors during the upgrade process that I had to click "Ignore" on for the
upgrade to finish and dealt with them afterwards. Be prepared to open and
SR and deal with any components not valid after the upgrade. You'll need
to test this many times.

11.2.0.4 is a complete install actually. You download the 11.2.0.4
patchset from My Oracle Support and install it in parallel to your 11.2.0.1
install.
For example:
Current might be: D:/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/dbhome_1
New might be: D:/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.4/dbhome_1
The above locations vary, but, you get the idea. Then, in a very small
nutshell, you restart the database with the new software and run upgrade
scripts against it.
I don’t want to complicate things too much, but, while you are doing this,
you might also decide to install the latest PSU (patch set update). This
is a small group of patches that act against the major version (11.2.0.4).

I don’t think I would be doing anyone a service writing out all the steps
to do this on the listserv here. There are many things to consider such as
backups, vendor certification, performance optimizer changes, etc. I would
recommend starting with the readme for the patchset and consulting popular
bloggers’ advice for examples and step by step.
Hopefully this gets you further along in the right direction though.

Hello List!
I have a 11g R2 DB running on Windows 2012 (11.2.0.1) and I need to apply
patch and/or psu to get 11.2.0.4
I've been a DBA for many years but principally focused on performance
tunning and development, this is the first time I need to patch a DB for
myself.
For the beggining, could someone explain me the difference between a Patch
and a PSU?, I found the following link where it containts all patches and
PSU's available, but don't know which exactly I need to use for going from
11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.4 (the table for 11.2.0.4, I guess?).
Any help is appreciated.
