Transport 8 to 9

We've got a couple of warehouses that use transport tablespace.
We're getting ready to convert to 9i going from 8.1.7.4 to 9.2.0.6.
Do both databases have to be converted at the same time to make or allow
the currently running transport tablespace to work?
If we convert the receiving database first to 9i, can we get a version 8
datafile to transport in?
