Thanks, I'll look into this. One other bit of information has come to
light - it appears that the server I was connecting to was having some
form of network problems. Any process on that server which needed access
to the SAN attached disks was hanging. Our Unix team haven't found out
why yet, but it seems likely that the dedicated server process would
have been hanging when I was trying to connect. Whether that results in
a different type of behaviour than a normal network issue which gives a
TNS connection timeout error, I don't know. I've never had any luck
finding documentation of the lower level details of how a SQL*Net
connection is established.
