We use maximum performance with log_archive_min_succeed_dest set to 1. If the standby(s) fail, then nagios starts crying like a baby and we restart managed recovery. It usually catches up in less than 15 minutes -- even if it's been down for an hour. Also, if you’re in maximum protection mode, then at some point, you’d run out of space to queue up archivelogs to be shipped to standby, at which point primary would hang….
