Oracle and Excel

All,
I have a developer who is trying to do some tricks with Excel
files in Oracle. He's acquired a freeware package off the web called as_xlsx
which is causing performance issues as we see them. Anyone have any experience
with this package & what are your recommendations.
The internet is a wonderful and dangerous thing at the same
time.
