Here's my hack attempt.. I won't explain it because I have to leave.. but
it should/ might be self explanatory..

--- Shell script to execute sqlplus and the sql script
$ cat x
#!/bin/ksh

sqlplus -s / @x.sql <<-EOT
`pwd`
EOT

--- The sql script
$ cat x.sql
set pause off

accept PWD

select '&PWD' PWD from dual;

--- Sample output
$ ./x
old 1: select '&PWD' PWD from dual
new 1: select '/db01/app/oracle' PWD from dual

PWD
--------------------------------
/db01/app/oracle
