I’ve been looking at Safari subscription and was lucky enough to have books
24x7 at a previous employer. To me the benefit was not in reading 10+ books per
year but in reading maybe 30-40 chapters from 20 different books.

Thanks all!
I checked the link from a mobile device first and the banner didn't show up,
nor did the discounts.It's all there if a normal browser is used.
Safari books subscription costs 399$/year, which is ~cost of 10 books. and I
don't manage reading that many (professional) books in a year, so I think
getting "one-off books" instead of "bundle deals" like that works better for
me.
Also I do most of the reading from kindle which has poor safaribooks support
(actually, close to no support last time I checked).

I bought 10 e-books for $10 each during the new year sale. The price was just
too tempting. But have not even downloaded them.
Instead I keep going back to Safari Bookshelf whenever I need to check
something.

BTW, I am subscribed to https://www.safaribooksonline.com and I would ;
personally lean towards that
and you get a ton of books https://www.safaribooksonline.com/pricing/ ;
not just o'reilly but apress and other publishers too
It also gives you access to video trainings.. and what I've noticed they are
more focused on the big data/data science area than the competitors
(pluralsight, lynda, tuts+). See their learning paths here
http://shop.oreilly.com/category/learning-path.do
Also, you have access to audio books and the awesome part about the
subscription is the conference recordings. The velocityconf, fluent, Strata +
Hadoop World are all there
