I also am in agreement with Hans. My former manager never recognized my
skills and accomplishments while constantly praising the incompetent DBA.
The end users knew the who really did the work and frequently sent "thank
you" emails, copying not only my manager, but his manager and the VPs.
Honestly, that recognition meant more to me than being lumped together with
the DBA wannabe bothered me. The worst part of the situation was spending
hours (sometimes days) cleaning up the messes this DBA made, but I enhanced
my skills by doing so in many instances. My skills and dedication bought
me more good will than the incompetent will ever have and gave me great
references for my next job, which is with a fantastic team of DBAs.
Focus on yourself; enhance your skills, get more visiblity in the company,
network with people on other teams not just DBAs. The rewards will be
worth it.
