High Performance MySQL should help you with these topics

http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920022343.do

I suggest you get 3 small machines/VMs on laptop(one master and 2
replicas), create and use the MySQL config file using
https://tools.percona.com/wizard and try out backup/recovery, replication
etc.

Can someone suggest a good resource to get up and running with MySQL for
an Oracle DBA? I've been reading the MySQL manuals and they are so content
rich it's exhausting. I'm looking for something that's more to the point
wrt backup options for 24x7 systems, architecture, performance tuning
especially.

Thanks in advance!
