Note that mirroring can also be done in the LVM layer. Though I've used LVM,
I've never implemented mirroring, but it is supported. Also, SuSE published a
most excellent whitepaper covering LVM, raw devices under Linux, and some info
on how to get Oracle working w/ it all.

The link is:
http://www.suse.com/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/documents.html

And it's the very first link in the list.

That software is built in, though it's not explained well in
SuSE's manual. I've only just figured out how to make it
work. Hopefully I'm recalling this correctly. When I
partitioned my system during my recent install of SLES 8, I
did the following:

1. Created a boot partion. Not sure how large I made this. I
think I gave it 10 sectors.

2. Created a swap partition on each drive.

3. Created two, big partitions for software RAID. I'm sorry,
I don't have the partitioning screen to look at, but you
have to choose not to format these partitions, and you must
give them the type set aside for RAID partitions. If you
have the screen in front of you, you can probably figure
this step out.

4. After creating two partitions as per step 3, I clicked
the RAID button at the bottom of the installer screen. This
brought up a new screen listing my two RAID partitions. I
clicked, or double-clicked, or did something, to create a
new mount-point using the two partitions in a RAID-1
configuration.

I'm a bit embarrassed at the vagueness of these
instructions, but I've only ever gone through this once. I
hope my memory of what I did is of some help.

Caveat: I have yet to "test" my RAID-1 setup. One of these
days I'll yank a drive out and see whether my data survives,
but I haven't reached that day yet.
