Can you clarify the situation?

What are the OSes involved? Which UNIX on the server? Windows, Linux
or UNIX on the laptop?

What X server are you running on the laptop (if the OS is Windows)?
Cygwin? Hummingbird eXceed?

Can you run another X11 programme on the server and it appear on the
lap top? Maybe try running Netscape or xclock?

You say that you've set the DISPLAY variable, have you exported it as well?

Are there any firewalls between you and the server? X11 is frequently
blocked as it's seen as a security hole by network/firewall admins.
