Thanks a lot Sayan. Your explanation makes perfect sense. I was able to
reproduce the scenario by simply increasing the length of the CHAR column
and leaving the length semantics as is (e.g. from 1 BYTE to 2 BYTE).
Perhaps a good interview question - "can table ddl ever cause a dml trigger
to fire?".
