What version of Oracle? In the limits section of the manual for 11g, the
VARCHAR2 data type is limited to 4,000 bytes. Check the "Reference"
manual for your version.
For version 12 it's also 4,000 but can be 32,767 if you have set
MAX_STRING_SIZE to EXTENDED in the spfile.
