All depends on how many layers between you and the disk...

A "raw partition" might be looking

a) directly at a chunk on a single disk
b) at a logical volume presented by a software volume manager and thus be 
'n' disks, (1<n<infinity)
c) at a logical volume presented by a software volume manager which came 
from a volume manager within a SAN 

etc etc etc
