If you are using this for DataGuard, there is a note on this.

Oracle no longer recommends the use of SSH with Data Guard Redo Transport 
Services (documented in MetaLink Note 751528.1).

Instead of using SSH - the note directs you to either:

 *   For redo compression please see note 729551.1 "Redo Transport Compression 
in a Data Guard Environment"
 *   For redo encryption please see note 749947.1 "Enabling Encryption for Data 
Guard Redo Transport"

Anyone seen any documenation on using port forwarding for compressing 
archivelogs on 11g?
There seems to be only little on 10g  Metalink.
