Tom,
It looks like you have done everything right so far according to MediCapture:

Thanks for the input, Sandor.
The surgery was recorded on a MediCapture 300USB. I have never used this,
but the OR nurse said if a USB is plugged in, it directly records to that,
and not the hard drive. She has emailed MediCapture to see if they have any
ideas, she could not find a file made on that date.
Someone involved with the study is also going to look at it tomorrow.

Tom, i suspect that you do not have the entire file - ie you have 1.43 GB of
it, but are missing the last 0.06 GB (random number, it could be anything)
MP4 video files can have probably a dozen different configurations, and some
allow "streaming", wherein you would be able to play the beginnings of a file
even if the end of it was not present, or did not exist (think about watching
a live stream of video) I am going to guess this is not how your OR recorder
writes its MP4 files (ours dont either)
i would try to re-export the file.

Sandor and Randall,
I downloaded the VCL media player, looks like it would be good to have.
However, with this file it is not playing. I highlight the file name and hit
the play button, and nothing, not even an error message. If I left-click on
the file and select "Media Information", the box opens with the file name
"V001.MP4" and also a file location. Everything else is blank. Clicking on
"Codec Details" the box opens but it is grayed out and blank. If I click on
"Statistics", the box opens and everything is 0.
I also tried QuickTime Player, it says "The movie 'V001.MP4' can't be opened
because the file is not in a format they QuickTime Player understands."
Seems it really is an empty file, but why does it take five minutes to copy?
I don't know what equipment "taped" that, but that is my next avenue to
investigate.
Thanks for your help.

Yes try VLC. I has opened about everything I have tried. Also make sure the
file extension is correct, ie, .mp4 or other.

VLC
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
With this, you should at least be able to open it & see what type of CODEC
the video is encoded with.
Did you try opening it in QuickTime Player? (at the mention of iMovie, i am
assuming you are on a Mac)

I have a 1.43 GB MPEG-4 surgery video file that will not open. Trying in
iMovie, the file is grayed out and will not highlight, and a message box
appears saying "Nothing to Import: You selected a directory to import, but no
importable movies were found inside. Please select another directory or
file."
Trying on a PC with Windows Media Player, the message box says "Windows Media
Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or
might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
When I copy the file to a USB, it takes about five minutes, so it seems that
there is 1.43 GB of data being transferred, and not just an empty file
labeled 1.43 GB.
I would expect MPEG-4 to be a common file format.
Any suggestions from the Optimal experts?
Thanks.
