Bob,

To partially answer your camera question, I have a magnifying lens made of 
metal--heavier than a regular camera, but I don't recall ever seeing a 
standard camera of metal.

I've also voiced issues about the Optacon II on this list in the past.  I 
always found its images to be mushy, and the decreased number of rows on the 
array took away important details about letters with downstrokes.  Bottom 
line is that this second generation machine incorporated design compromises 
that made it less well suited to my reading needs, and I had some buyer's 
remorse over it.
