Remote Control News | 🍼 Courtney Barnett x MTV Unplugged airs this weekend, Fat
Freddy's Drop & Milk On Milk releases out now + win gig tickets!Hi All,
Thought I’d share this with the Group – a newsletter I get as an Australian
radio presenter. You can watch Courtney Barnett and Paul Kelly perform Archie
Roach’s “Charcoal Lane” ahead of this Sunday’s MTV Unplugged screening of the
whole Courtney Barnett concert.
Speaking of Archie, I was in Dymocks bookshop in Perth last month and spotted
his book “tell me why”. which they were selling for $39.99 instead of the list
price of $49.99 (it’s a hardback)..
There’s a great story of Paul being introduced to his music and Archie
subsequently being asked to open to open for him (2 songs) at Melbourne Concert
Hall. After his soundcheck a “little fella”, who Archie thought was security,
knocked on his dressing room door and asked him if he needed anything. “Nice
bloke” he thought” “Very friendly for a bouncer” When he got on stage and
picked up his guitar, the “bouncer looking fella” gave him the thumbs up. When
he walked off stage, to rapturous applause, “the little bouncer fella had tears
in his eyes as he shook my hand”.
After the performance he couldn’t wait to get home, but “On the way out, music
came to my ears, lovely and familiar. It was coming to the stage and I was
drawn to it. The band was playing Before Too Long, a wonderful song about the
hopefulness and irresistibility of love that I’d heard on the radio and
enjoyed, but had never known it was a song from this Paul Kelly and The
Messengers. And I was shocked to find that the guy singing on stage was the
little security bloke dressed all in black with the boxer’s nose.
